If I am having trouble with what happens next, but know something that will happen later, I may write the scenes out of order. Sometimes forcing yourself to write even five lines is enough, but sometimes you really need to go out for a walk. Is the issue that you are scared, or that you are following the wrong track with a plot line? And it really just depends.(less)

It is almost as if you are discovering the story, and learning it, instead of writing it, and that amazes me.(less)

Spooky Season: Finishing up the series

Writing about this has been very drawn-out; there was a lot happening. I pursued different themes, and had other things to write about that were not related to Spooky Season at all.

Really, the only thing left is the series:

(Perhaps I should note that I have now read the Universal Monsters Mummy book now and I did not hate it.)

I thought I would really hate the colonial aspects. Without saying that this is a good source for a multicultural view, it was really entertaining and mostly not frustrating in the way I expected.

Fun collection of stories, often a little scary. Gives a better idea of Trinidad and its people.

"This book has gotten some great reviews here on Goodreads, but I honestly don’t understand how. It’s a page-turner, I’ll give Grisham that, but that’s about it.

The timeline doesn’t make any sense, the only female character we get to follow is not eve" Read more of this review »

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”

“Look you wanna know the truth? I don’t really care about the
stats or the cup or the trophy or anything like that. In fact even the games aren’t that important to me. What matters to me is the perfect throw, making the perfect catch, the perfect step and block. Perfection. That's what it's about. It's those moments. When you can feel the perfection of creation. The beauty the physics you know the wonder of mathematics. The elations of action and reaction and that is the kind of perfection that I want to be connected to.”

Václav Havel
“In an era when metaphysical and existential certainties are in a state of crisis, when people are being uprooted and alienated and are losing their sense of what this world means, this ideology inevitably has a certain hypnotic charm. To wandering humankind it offers an immediately available home: all one has to do is accept it, and suddenly everything becomes clear once more, life takes on new meaning, and all mysteries, unanswered questions, anxiety, and loneliness vanish. Of course, one pays dearly for this low-rent home: the price is abdication of one’ s own reason, conscience, and responsibility, for an essential aspect of this ideology is the consignment of reason and conscience to a higher authority. The principle involved here is that the center of power is identical with the center of truth.”
Václav Havel, The Power of the Powerless

Václav Havel
“If the main pillar of the system is living a lie, then it is not surprising that the fundamental threat to it is living the truth. This is why it must be suppressed more severely than anything else.”
